Tunisia is actively participating in the third United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution, which is being held in Kenya from November 11 to 19, with the aim of formulating a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC3).

The Tunisian delegation, represented by the Ministry of Environment through the National Focal Point of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, presented its statement on the zero draft of the legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. This instrument was mandated by the United Nations Environment Assembly Resolution 5/14.

Ongoing discussions focus on the content of the draft, and are being conducted within three communication groups to enhance the preparation of the preliminary document for the fourth session, according to a statement from the Ministry of Environment issued Thursday.

The primary objective of the document is to establis
h a legally binding international agreement to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution.

The world is currently grappling with an annual production of 400 million tonnes of plastic waste. The United Nations Environment Programme predicts that this amount will double by 2040 if the current situation continues.
