Turkana: The Department of Health and Sanitation of Turkana has celebrated the International Medical Laboratory Science Day, which highlights the essential role that laboratories play in diagnosing diseases, monitoring health, and ensuring quality patient care.
According to Kenya News Agency, this year’s theme-Biomedical Laboratory Scientists Promoting Sustainability in Clinical Diagnostics-emphasizes the critical role of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists in advancing clinical health care while prioritizing environmental responsibility. The Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive Health Services, Janerose Tioko, acknowledged that laboratory scientists are integral to diagnosis, quality development and assurance, treatment, and research development in modern medical sciences.
Tioko stated, “This event not only honors the efforts but also encourages ongoing support and advocacy for better resources and training in the field of laboratory medicine.” She highlighted significant strides made by the county in improving healthcare services, which include investing in upgrading laboratory facilities, providing modern equipment, and enhancing the capacity of laboratory professionals to improve service quality.
Chief Medical Laboratory Technologist, Benjamin Lowoko, echoed these sentiments, noting that the county has made investments in upgrading laboratory facilities and providing modern equipment. He also pointed out the enhancement of training opportunities for laboratory professionals. “Today, the county government, in a special way, honors the dedication and resilience of laboratory professionals across the county,” Lowoko expressed.
Additionally, Chief Tioko recognized collaborations with NGOs and national health authorities, which have further strengthened the capacity of laboratories in the region. Despite these advancements, she called for more support for better resources and training in the field of laboratory medicine.
The Lodwar County Referral Hospital (LCRH) offers a comprehensive range of key laboratory tests, while sub-county hospitals provide most of these tests, including Malaria Microscopy, Complete Blood Count, HIV testing, Tuberculosis, Blood Glucose Testing, Serological tests, MARKERS, blood donation, Cholera diagnosis, Occult blood test, Cultures, CD4 counts, and Profiles. The event was attended by the Senior Health Management Team and the County Health Management Team.
