Turkana: The County Government of Turkana has initiated the development of a Ten-Year Physical and Land Use Plan for Turkwel Urban Centre, following a stakeholder validation forum held to gather public input and align planning with community needs.
According to Kenya News Agency, the strategic plan is anchored in the County Spatial Plan 2023-2033 and aims to guide sustainable land use, improve infrastructure, and support projected population growth in Turkwel. The Department of Lands and Physical Planning convened the forum in Turkwel Ward, drawing participation from local residents, opinion leaders, and officials from the National Land Commission.
Speaking during the session, Chief Officer for Lands and Physical Planning Leah Losiru emphasised the importance of inclusive planning. In her remarks, the Chief Officer said that the involvement of the residents was part of the governance process that allows for the input of the beneficiaries in a bid to deliver fit-for-purpose programmes. 'This plan is a roadmap to an organised and prosperous urban centre. We are here to listen to your ideas and ensure this plan reflects your priorities,' she said.
County physical planners and surveyors presented key components of the plan, detailing proposals for residential zoning, commercial hubs, green spaces, and utility corridors. They also addressed community concerns on land ownership, service delivery, and urban sprawl. Community members welcomed the initiative, citing the need for structured development. 'We've witnessed rapid growth in Turkwel, but without proper planning, services like water, roads, and schools become overstretched. This plan gives us hope for a better tomorrow,' said Ekiru Joseph, a resident of Turkwel.
The forum marked a critical step in ensuring that the final plan is community-driven and aligned with both county and national development priorities.
