Kisii: Two people have died while 16 others sustained injuries after a lorry lost control and rammed into vehicles at Daraja Mbili market along the Kisii-Migori road on Wednesday morning.
According to Kenya News Agency, out of the 16 individuals, four are said to be in critical condition and the rest sustained minor injuries, all of whom are currently seeking treatment at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Confirming the incident, Kitutu Central Sub-County Police Commander Kazungu Charo said the lorry which was ferrying cooking oil rammed into two vehicles and four motorcycles during the incident. 'As a result, we lost two traders, a man and a woman, who were going about their businesses at the market at that time,' noted Charo.
Speaking separately at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH), Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo condoled with the bereaved families and lauded the KTRH staff for responding swiftly and attending to the injured individuals. Obebo expressed concern over the operations of the small-scale traders at the Daraja Mbili market along the Kisii-Migori highway saying the area should be considered a black spot.
'If this incident would have occurred on a market day, it would have been disastrous and that is why we are working with Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to find a lasting solution,' noted the Deputy Governor. The bodies of the deceased have since been moved to the KTRH morgue.
