Uasin gishu: Uasin Gishu leaders have joined the nation in mourning the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a father figure, mentor, and a key architect of Kenya's democratic and devolved governance system. Speaking to journalists in Kapseret town, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea both paid glowing tribute to the late opposition leader, emphasizing his enduring influence on the country's political and constitutional transformation.
According to Kenya News Agency, MP Sudi expressed deep personal sorrow, describing Raila as both a father figure and a close friend despite their political differences. "Raila was a man of great humility. He respected everyone and could even respond to calls from young journalists. Personally, I considered him not just a political leader but a true friend and father figure," said Sudi. He added that Kenya had lost a statesman who brought transformative change and mentored many leaders across political divides. "The entire nation is united in mourning his passing. Even here in Uasin Gishu, our people are taking part in the tributes," he noted.
Sudi announced that residents who may not be able to travel to Kisumu or Bondo for the funeral will have an opportunity to follow the proceedings through large public screens. Viewing centers will be set up at Zion Mall on Friday and Saturday, and at the Eldoret Sports Club on Sunday. "These arrangements will allow our people to follow the funeral and join the rest of the country in paying their last respects to Baba," he said.
On his part, Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, described Raila Odinga as a pillar of Kenya's democracy and a key force behind the 2010 Constitution that anchored devolution. "Raila Odinga's vision and courage gave life to the devolved system of government that today empowers counties like ours to serve people better. His legacy will continue to guide us in protecting and strengthening devolution," Kapkea said.
He noted that Raila enjoyed deep respect in Uasin Gishu, recalling that residents affectionately nicknamed him 'Ram' during his visit to the region in 2007. Kapkea said the County Government had organized public mourning events for residents to honor the late leader. Viewing screens will be mounted at Zion Mall street on Friday and Saturday, followed by a county-wide gathering at the Eldoret Sports Club on Saturday. He also delivered official condolences from the Uasin Gishu County Government and residents to the Odinga family and all Kenyans, noting that Governor Jonathan Bii had already expressed his sympathies through social media.
Kapkea further commended Raila's mentorship of young leaders and his lifelong fight for justice and equality. "Generations to come will remember him as a leader who fought for justice, equality, and the empowerment of all Kenyans through devolution," he said. Both leaders urged residents to unite in reflection and honor the enduring legacy of a man whose struggle reshaped Kenya's democracy.
