Post: Ugandan Cyclists Jordan Schleck and Mary Aleper Triumph at Vipingo in LOOP Safari Gravel Coast Series

Nairobi: Uganda's Jordan Schleck and Mary Aleper braved scorching coastal heat to defend their titles in the 120 km elite race of the 2025 LOOP Safari Gravel Coast Series, outpacing more than 300 cyclists on the rugged Vipingo trails.

According to Kenya News Agency, the high-stakes race, staged against the scenic palm-fringed highlands overlooking the Indian Ocean, saw Schleck clinch his fifth career victory in the event, finishing in 4:28:47. His compatriot Lawrence Lorot followed in second place at 4:40:03, with Kenya's Kenneth Karaya taking third in 4:45:00. Ephantus Gicheru (4:50:18) and Ivan Kipruto (4:50:20) completed the top five.

'The terrain was tough, but I thrive in sunny conditions. My training has been solid, so I knew I had what it takes to win,' said Schleck after crossing the finish line. Since the launch of Kenya's premier gravel racing event by the Amani Project with LOOP DFS as the title sponsor, Schleck has now won five of the eight editions.

In the elite women's category, Aleper clocked 5:48:46 to retain her crown, narrowly edging Grace Kaviro, who finished in 5:51:09. Kenya's Kendra Masiga took third in 6:40:32. 'I am happy to defend my title at Vipingo. It was not an easy course, but I trained harder after finishing third in Tatu City and fifth in Machakos. Coming all the way from Uganda to win is humbling,' Aleper said.

The top five finishers in the elite 120 km race were rewarded with cash prizes of Sh20,000, Sh15,000, Sh10,000, Sh7,000, and Sh5,000, respectively. In the team category, Black Mamba emerged as champions, pocketing Sh125,000. Ariya Finergy Solar Vortex finished second to claim Sh100,000, while Joy Riders secured third with Sh70,000.

Hanifa Said, Chief Operating Officer of the Amani Project, praised the rising stature of the series, which continues to attract both local and international cyclists. 'This series is transforming cycling in Kenya and beyond by providing four world-class racing opportunities each year while nurturing talent across the region,' she said. She also revealed the project's long-term goal of fielding an all-East African team at the prestigious Tour de France.

LOOP Digital Financial Services CEO Eric Muriuki said the success of the Vipingo race capped off a highly successful season that has fueled regional cycling growth. 'We celebrate not only the winners of today's race but also the remarkable progress of the entire series. Participation numbers continue to rise, showing that cycling is gaining traction across East Africa,' Muriuki noted. He added, 'Undoubtedly, this event is reshaping the outlook of cycling in Kenya and the region. The increased participation of riders from neighbouring countries demonstrates how sport can drive integration, tourism, and talent development.'

The LOOP Safari Gravel Series, which spans Tatu City, Machakos, Hell's Gate, and Naivasha, has become a cornerstone of East Africa's cycling calendar, blending elite competition with community engagement and sustainable tourism.
