Post: USAID Stawi Allocates Sh80 Million for Water Projects in Turkana County

Turkana: The United States Agency for International Development Stawi has allocated Sh80 million for various water projects in Turkana County. The initiative is aimed at improving water accessibility and addressing key socio-economic challenges in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, the projects include the protection of Borehole 9 in Kanamkemer as well as the Naregae, Kang’alita, and Lokwaliwa water projects. USAID Stawi’s water technical advisor, Job Kitetu, stated that the projects were at different stages of completion. He emphasized that Sh4 million has been earmarked specifically for safeguarding Borehole 9 in Kanamkemer from destruction and submersion by the nearby river.

The funds will be used to construct a 90-cubic-metre elevated steel tank at the Kanamkemer slaughterhouse, equip the borehole, and provide additional protective measures. Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus highlighted that water accessibility is a top priority in Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai’s Nine-Point Development Agenda.

Dr. Erus stated, “As a government, we must ensure water is accessible to everyone in this county. With concerted efforts, I urge our partners to support us in protecting Borehole 9 to prevent a potential disaster. The borehole yields 100 cubic metres of water and serves 4,000 people in Kanamkemer.”
