Kirinyaga: Mount Kenya University: Mount Kenya University (MKU) students are set to receive an enhanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) training boost following the unveiling of a state-of-the-art educational humanoid robot. The robot is designed to transform learning, research, and innovation at the institution.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot, unveiled at the university's Thika Main Campus, is expected to provide learners with an immersive, hands-on environment where they can directly interact with an intelligent machine. Students will be able to build and test algorithms, programme the robot to perform tasks, and experiment with technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics engineering.
Dr John Kamau, Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics, stated that the robot will bridge the gap between theory and practical application by giving students real-time exposure to how AI systems are built, trained, and deployed. "Students will use this robot to develop and test new algorithms, understand robotic behaviour, and explore multiple programming languages. This enhances problem-solving skills and deepens their mastery of AI concepts," he said.
He further noted that the robot will be applied across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, and various capstone projects. It will also support student-led innovation challenges, enabling learners to prototype solutions for real-world problems using advanced AI tools.
MKU's Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Simon Gicharu, emphasized that the robot will equip students with modern, industry-relevant skills to give them a competitive edge in the job market. "Today's industry demands graduates who understand AI-driven systems, automation, and emerging technologies," said Prof. Gicharu.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi added that the introduction of the humanoid robot complements the rollout of new AI-focused academic programmes and the university's strategic direction that places technology at the centre of teaching and learning. "This aligns with the university's rollout of 13 new and revised academic programmes, including flagship degrees in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence," said Prof. Jaganyi.
Students have welcomed the innovation, saying it will greatly enhance their creativity, technical expertise, and confidence in designing AI-based solutions.
