Vihiga County: Vihiga County Boda Boda Sacco Society on Saturday unveiled an ambitious five-year strategic plan that will see the Sacco roll out a digital platform, adopt e-mobility solutions, and develop a recently acquired three-acre parcel of land. The 1,800-member Sacco aims to professionalize the sector and increase daily revenue for its members through the adoption of affordable and reliable electric motorcycles.
According to Kenya News Agency, MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, who presided over the event, challenged players in the bodaboda sector to professionalize their operations and adopt new cost-cutting methods to boost confidence among members and increase revenue. Oparanya emphasized the importance of long-term planning, stating, "Today's contributions should be the foundation for self-reliance and growth."
Leaders at the event donated over nine million shillings, with President William Ruto contributing Sh5 million to boost the Sacco's funds. Senator Aaron Cheruiyot highlighted the government's commitment to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which aims to uplift livelihoods and reduce poverty by empowering local businesses and communities. "When we campaigned, we promised a bottom-up approach to economic transformation, and that is it," said Senator Cheruiyot, emphasizing the administration's focus on grassroots empowerment and inclusive development.
Sacco Chairlady Gladys Mwiganzi noted that the support would help the Sacco invest in the newly acquired land and enhance digital savings systems. "Our Sacco has grown to over 1,800 members organized in 150 groups, including boda boda riders, mama mboga, and youth. Members save Ksh 50 daily and can access loans after six months at only 2% interest," she explained.
The event took place at Manyatta Chango Mbale Municipality, in Vihiga County.
