Vihiga: The County Government of Vihiga has finalised the development of a Sand Harvesting and Quarrying Policy aimed at promoting sustainable management of the natural resources. The rate of sand harvesting and quarrying in the county has increased following the rising demand for construction materials. However, the absence of clear regulations has over the years led to illegal activities, overexploitation of resources, environmental degradation, leading to increased conflicts over resource use.
According to Kenya News Agency, the new policy seeks to balance economic benefits with environmental conservation and community well-being. It proposes sustainable extraction methods, enforcement of site rehabilitation, adoption of climate-resilient technologies, protection of water sources, and the safeguarding of sensitive ecosystems. Speaking during a review and validation exercise, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr. Jairus Amayi, said the policy will provide a framework to address the challenges associated with uncontrolled harvesting.
The validation forum brought together technical experts, government officers, and representatives of community groups who deliberated on the policy and shared insights. Participants endorsed the policy and pledged their support towards sustainable resource management in the county.
