Post: West Pokot County Strengthens Fight Against Drug Abuse

West pokot: West Pokot County residents joined the rest of the country in marking the annual International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed on the 26th of June, with a strong call for collective efforts in combating drug and substance abuse.

According to Kenya News Agency, speaking during the county-level celebrations under the theme 'Invest in Prevention' and slogan 'Breaking the Circle, Stopping the Organized Crime,' National Authority of the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) Executive Member in West Pokot County, Ms. Scola Komen, emphasized the growing concern over drug and alcohol abuse within the region. She noted that extensive research and data collected had revealed a troubling trend with even school-going children increasingly being victims of the drug and alcohol abuse menace.

Ms. Komen highlighted that prevention is crucial to combat the rising drug and alcohol abuse habits and tendencies observed in society. She reported that NACADA was focusing on youth advocacy and education to ensure that all young people are well informed and empowered to resist drug abuse. Additionally, NACADA is investing in treatment and rehabilitation for those already affected, and she urged residents to utilize the support systems available through NACADA offices in the county.

According to the national statistics referenced by Komen, the effects of drug abuse are both physical and mental, affecting individuals and communities at large. West Pokot Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Wycliffe Munada reiterated the government's commitment to cracking down on illicit alcoholic drinks and drug distribution networks within the county. He warned those involved in illegal drug activities in West Pokot that enforcement efforts are ongoing and determined.

Munada acknowledged the challenges of enforcement due to the tactics employed by traffickers and users but expressed confidence that ongoing efforts by security agencies would dismantle the criminal networks. The event served as a rallying call for unity among community members, government agencies, and civil society to stand together in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse, particularly among the youth who are the most vulnerable demographics.
