Post: 26 Francophone African Researchers Enhance Skills at Afrobarometer Summer School

Cotonou: Twenty-six young francophone African researchers have successfully enhanced their skills in research, data analysis, and scientific writing at the recent Afrobarometer summer school and thematic workshop held from November 3 to 21 in Cotonou, Benin.

According to African Press Organization, the annual event, which rotates among different regions of the continent, offers courses in either French or English and aims to equip young researchers with fundamental knowledge in research design, survey methodology, and data analysis.

The 2025 edition of the Afrobarometer summer school focused on leveraging public opinion data to scrutinize significant topics such as democracy and governance, climate change, gender, migration, trade, and access to health care. Concurrently, the thematic workshop provided a platform for researchers from the Afrobarometer network, academics, and practitioners to enhance their quantitative methods expertise. The workshop aimed to improve understanding of multiple linear and logistic regression models, apply advanced methods to Afrobarometer survey themes, foster a collaborative learning environment, and facilitate networking opportunities for future research collaborations.

For participants like Toavina Rafidimanana, data manager at COEF-Ressources, Afrobarometer's national partner in Madagascar, the experience was a pivotal step in his career. He noted that the training broadened his understanding of research methodology and honed his ability to interpret survey results for more informed decision-making. Similarly, Farmata Diarra, a specialist in social and solidarity economy, highlighted the programme's value in enhancing the data processing and analysis skills of young individuals.

Eteke Ngoungou Yolande, an economist and doctoral candidate at the University of Yaoundé II, expressed that the Afrobarometer thematic workshop was more than just an academic opportunity. She emphasized its significance in her journey as a researcher in governance, public policy, and development. Yolande plans to raise awareness about Afrobarometer within scientific circles upon her return home and intends to organize sessions with other young researchers to encourage the integration of Afrobarometer data into their teaching. She believes this data is crucial for better informing public policy in Africa.

These training programmes are part of Afrobarometer’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of African researchers who can produce high-quality data and strengthen evidence-based policymaking across the continent.
