Post: General Birame Diop Assumes Leadership as New ECOWAS Commission President

Abuja: The ECOWAS Commission has officially welcomed General Birame Diop of Senegal as its new President during a formal ceremony held at its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. The event marked the transition of leadership with the outgoing President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia, passing the baton to General Diop. Alongside this significant change, Anthony Ogunjimi of Nigeria was inaugurated as the new Vice President, succeeding Damtien Tchintchibidja of Togo.According to African Press Organization, the ceremony was not only a transition of leadership but also celebrated the unveiling of the ECOWAS@50 Special Exclusive Publication, produced in collaboration with the Africa Agenda Network. This marked a significant milestone in the history of the organization as it moves forward under new leadership. The handover included a symbolic presentation of the Management Performance Compendium to the incoming President and the signing of handover notes by both outgoing and incoming officials.In addition to th e new President and Vice President, several other key appointments were made. These include Dr. Kalilou Sylla from Côte d'Ivoire as Commissioner for Internal Services, Mrs. Francess Piagie Alghali from Sierra Leone as Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Mr. Dehpue Yenpea Zuo from Liberia as Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture. Other appointees included Amin Amidu Sulemani from Ghana, Prof. Nassirou Bako-Arifari from Benin, Ms. Carla Maria Borges Bettencourt from Cabo Verde, Dr. Palokinam Pitche from Togo, and Mr. Mam Cherno Jallow.Outgoing officials such as Dr. Habibu Bappah, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, Mr. Joao Alage Mamadu Fadia, and Dr. Melchior Aïssi were also acknowledged for their service. In his farewell address, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead and highlighted the accomplishments achieved during his tenure.In his inaugural address, General Birame Diop emphasized the need for renewed unity and mutual respect to advance regional integration and strengthen the ECOWAS Commission's effectiveness. He urged collaboration to build a cohesive and efficient institution capable of addressing the challenges and aspirations of the West African region.Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, encouraged the new leadership to focus on implementing regional programs that deliver tangible results. He highlighted the importance of initiatives that improve lives, strengthen integration, and contribute to peace and sustainable development across West Africa.As ECOWAS embarks on a new chapter with its new leadership, there is a clear call to translate commitments into measurable results, ensuring the regional project remains a beacon of peace, prosperity, and unity for West Africa.
