Post: Burkina: Ag Ibrahim Mohamed Dedicates His Second Book to the Growth of the Mining Sector

Ouagadougou: Writer Ag Ibrahim Mohamed signed his second book on Wednesday, entitled "Burkina Faso: A Tenor of Gold," aiming to contribute to the development of the mining sector in the country. "My book is a contribution to the potential of the Burkinabe mining sector, its evolution, its management, its economic benefits, its resilience, and the prospects," said Ag Ibrahim Mohamed, the author.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the book, which comprises six parts, twenty chapters, and 345 pages, offers insights into the country's gold mining sector. The author presented his book on Thursday at the Mercury bookstore in Ouagadougou's Zone d'activitEs diverses (ZAD), attended by former ministers, authorities, relatives, and friends. Ag Ibrahim Mohamed highlighted that gold plays a crucial role in Burkina Faso's economy, accounting for 96% of the extractive sector, 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 25% of tax revenues, and 84% of exports in 2024. He noted that gold revenues increased significantly from 9 billion CFA francs in 2008 to 548 billion CFA francs in 2024.

The author pointed out that 22% of Burkina Faso's territory contains gold-bearing rocks. He remarked on the exponential growth of the mining sector since the inauguration of the industrial mine in Taparko in 2007, with gold production rising from 0.4 tons to 61.4 tons in 2024. Mohamed also shared that nearly 2 million gold miners operate on 800 sites nationwide.

He recalled that Burkina Faso's gold production was primarily industrial, with artisanal mining contributing less than one ton. In 2024, the National Society of Precious Substances (SONAP) collected eight to ten tons from January to June 2025. The book was driven by two motivations: sharing his mining experiences from 2009 to 2021 and paying tribute to geologists amid the mining boom. Ag Ibrahim Mohamed emphasized how the mining sector made Burkina a nation with high poverty but with significant industrial mining activity, making gold the leading export and job provider. The author previously published "The Nuggets of Essakane" in September 2023 and is a former director of the Private Press Support Fund (FAPP).
