Post: County Issues Public Alert on Looming Heavy Rain Risks

Uasin gishu: Uasin Gishu County's Department of Health has issued a public notice to alert all the residents about the ongoing heavy rains in various parts of the region and the county. In the public notice, Dr. Evans Kiprotich, the County Director of Health, underscored the potential dangers associated with the heavy downpour, which include waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and others.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Kiprotich mentioned flooding as another serious hazard that comes with the heavy rains, leading to the destruction of homes, crops, roads, and bridges. He also outlined risks of landslides, especially in hilly and slopy areas, and highlighted electric hazards due to fallen powerlines which pose a risk of electrocution. Additional dangers include infrastructure damage such as collapsed buildings, toilets, and open shades, as well as lightning and strong winds.

The public was urged to observe several safety measures, such as avoiding crossing flooded rivers and walking in moving water, and steering clear of entering buildings or latrines showing signs of cracks. Keeping children indoors, away from rivers and open drains, is also advised. Residents are also cautioned against touching fallen electrical wires and are advised to avoid parking or sheltering under trees during rain. Ensuring food is stored safely, boiling and treating drinking water, stocking essential supplies, and staying updated through official government and media alerts are also important precautions.

In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to use hotline numbers 0710646464 or 0532061185 to contact the Uasin Gishu County fire and rescue team and Ambulance/Health Services through 0754027027.
