Post: Kiambu Waives Medical Bills for Protest Victims

Kiambu: The County Government of Kiambu has announced a full waiver of all medical bills for residents who sustained injuries during the recent protest activities across the county.

According to Kenya News Agency, the announcement was made by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services, Dr. Elias Maina, who stated that the decision came after consultations with key stakeholders in the health and emergency response sectors. Dr. Maina highlighted that the initiative aims to ease the burden on families dealing with the aftermath of the unrest.

Dr. Maina explained, "We are aware that many of our people were caught up in the unfortunate chaos and ended up in our health facilities, some with serious injuries. As a government, we are committed to ensuring that no resident is further burdened by the cost of medical care during such difficult times."

The waiver includes all treatment costs incurred in public health facilities across the county, encompassing emergency services, surgeries, admissions, and post-treatment care. Medical teams have been instructed to provide care without requiring payment from those affected.

The protests, which erupted in several towns within Kiambu County last week, led to numerous injuries as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement officers. Many victims were taken to nearby health centers, sub-county hospitals, and Kiambu Level 5 Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Residents have expressed their approval of the move, describing it as a relief for families already impacted by the unrest. Jonah Mwaura, a resident of Kiambu constituency, shared, "I brought a friend here at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after she was hurt by a gunshot during the Saba Saba protest. Hearing that we don't have to pay gives us great relief."

The county government has urged residents to remain calm and seek peaceful ways to express their concerns. Dr. Maina reassured that medical facilities are on high alert to handle any emergencies that might occur.
