Kerio valley: Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed a renewed crackdown on lawbreakers and illicit brews in the Kerio Valley region, warning that peace must prevail despite ongoing threats from banditry and drug abuse. Speaking during the fundraiser in aid of AIC Mission Hospital Kapsowar's outpatient department, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Murkomen reiterated the government's zero-tolerance approach towards criminal elements terrorizing residents in the volatile region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen stated, 'We can lose a few criminals in the Kerio Valley region, but peace must prevail,' underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He further announced that the terms of service for chiefs and their assistant chiefs will be reviewed to ensure accountability and productivity in tackling local challenges.
'The government will not compromise on the security of the Kerio Valley. Any officer entertaining laxity must stop immediately. Those who have been tainted in their duties will be replaced with officers willing to work,' he said. The CS outlined key priorities for the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) right from the chiefs and their assistants including intensified operations against illicit alcohol, bhang cultivation, and banditry.
'Their main task is to deal with illicit alcohol, bhang and banditry and ensure the safety of our communities,' he added. The announcement comes amid escalating calls from the area residents for stricter measures against the recurrent wave of attacks and the proliferation of illegal substances fueling unrest in the Kerio Valley.
Kerio Valley is primarily located within Elgeyo Marakwet County. It also extends into parts of Baringo County and West Pokot County. Specifically, the valley stretches from Kimwarer in Elgeyo Marakwet County northwards to Chesegon, which marks the border between Marakwet and West Pokot counties.
