Cotonou: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has intensified its efforts to position West Africa as a leading global tourist destination. This initiative was marked by the inauguration of a four-day technical meeting held in Cotonou, Benin, commencing on July 8, 2025. The meeting gathered experts from member states to deliberate on six draft classification standards for tourist accommodation establishments, covering hotels, motels, inns, ecolodges, aparthotels, and holiday villages. This event was organized in collaboration with the private sector and industry directorates.
According to African Press Organization, in the opening address, Mrs. Massandje Toure-Litse, the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, represented by Dr. Tony Luka Elumelu, Director of the Private Sector, reiterated ECOWAS's vision to utilize tourism as a key driver for economic growth and regional integration. The region is focused on developing a thriving tourism industry that aligns international best practices with the unique West African context, aiming to transform it into a favored global tourist destination.
The strategy for this transformation is structured around five interconnected pillars. These include enhancing infrastructure with investments in transport, accommodation, and tourist attractions, and easing regional visa policies for third-country nationals to improve accessibility and streamline procedures. Additionally, the harmonization of sectoral standards and regulations is intended to facilitate travel, trade, and improve the tourism experience. The promotion of sustainable tourism practices is also a priority to ensure the industry remains environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable. Finally, fostering collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders is crucial for pooling expertise, sharing knowledge, and devising effective solutions to common challenges.
