ECOWAS Enhances Menstrual Health for Over 5,000 Young Girls in Benin

Accra: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has improved menstrual health and well-being for over 5,000 young girls in the municipalities of Zè and Djidja, Benin. From September 25 to October 3, 2025, ECOWAS Representation in Benin led a significant awareness campaign focused on menstrual hygiene management (MHM). As part of this effort, 5,000 reusable sanitary towel kits were distributed, under the project aimed at supporting Benin's initiatives to educate young girls on personal and menstrual hygiene practices. This initiative was funded by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO).

According to African Press Organization, the campaign followed training sessions for trainers conducted from September 16 to 19, 2025, in Zè and Djidja. Around 20 participants from departmental social affairs and secondary education services were trained. These trainers subsequently visited 10 general education colleges in Zè and 13 colleges and vocational training centres in Djidja. Their mission was to raise awareness among young girls regarding reproductive health, menstrual hygiene management, and the sustainable use of reusable sanitary pads.

The activities undertaken through this initiative not only improved the knowledge of more than 5,000 young girls on good hygiene practices but also bolstered their self-esteem and dignity. This contributed to a reduction in school absenteeism related to menstruation.
