Laikipia: Over 100 elderly individuals from Umande, located in the Laikipia East Sub County, have received relief food supplies intended to alleviate hunger as the region grapples with an ongoing drought. The initiative, organized to provide essential support to seniors aged 60 and above, involved the distribution of food items such as porridge flour and rice.
According to Kenya News Agency, the relief effort was spearheaded by Kapu Africa and International Relief for Africa. Dr. Allan Mugambi, a philanthropist behind the initiative, emphasized the challenges faced by older adults, who are often overlooked and left to endure hardships without support. He called for a collective effort to assist the elderly, especially during drought conditions.
Dr. Mugambi stressed the importance of providing nutritious meals to older adults to enhance their immune systems and mitigate age-related health issues. Additionally, the beneficiaries were educated on healthy living practices. The county feeding programme coordinator, Koome Kiragu, highlighted the necessity for more collaborative initiatives to combat malnutrition among the elderly, pointing out the severe health risks posed by prolonged food insecurity.
Leah Muthoni, a widow and one of the recipients of the food supplies, expressed her appreciation for the assistance, noting the significant impact of receiving nutritious food. She urged for continued support to address the ongoing scarcity of food resources.
