Post: Gendia Alumni Lead Tree-Planting Drive at Mazingira Day Celebration

Rachuonyo: The alumni of Gendia High School in Rachuonyo sub-county contributed to the planting of over 300 trees at their alma mater in celebration of Mazingira Day. The event featured a procession led by the school band and was attended by several government officials, including Shadrack Too, the area Assistant County Commissioner (ACC).

According to Kenya News Agency, Nuhu Omollo Masoud, an alumnus and the patron of the 'Plant Trees For a Better Environment' CBO, expressed his connection to the school and emphasized the importance of tree planting for environmental conservation. Masoud, who holds the Head of State Commendation (HSC), praised President Dr. William Ruto's commitment to environmental conservation efforts. He highlighted the Kenya Kwanza government's support for initiatives that promote forest restoration and environmental sustainability.

Masoud also encouraged students to continue tree planting beyond school and gifted pens to Form Four candidates as a gesture of goodwill ahead of their exams. He appealed to local residents to emulate the alumni's efforts by planting trees at their former schools, aiming to contribute to the national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Peter Omondi, the Sub County Forester Officer, explained that the 300 seedlings planted consisted of fruit trees and various indigenous species, urging students to ensure their growth. Gendia High School Principal James Okeno expressed gratitude to the alumni and officials for their involvement in the initiative, committing to the care and growth of the trees by the students.

The event also saw the participation of ACC East Karachuonyo Division Ezekiel Odhiambo and Sub County Police Commander Stephen Tanui, reflecting a strong community partnership in environmental conservation efforts.
