Post: Governor Lenku Commissions Kitengela Market

Kajiado: Governor Joseph ole Lenku has commissioned the new Kitengela Market, which was fully funded by his County government at a cost of Sh150 million. While addressing the market traders in Kitengela, Governor Lenku stated that the market would accommodate 2,000 traders, providing a much-needed solution for the town's over 3,500 traders who previously occupied roadsides, causing significant traffic jams.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Lenku announced that the Trade Department would conduct a validation process followed by balloting on Tuesday next week. He urged traders to collaborate with county officers for a smooth, inclusive, and transparent transition into the new market space. The governor also mentioned the inclusion of facilities like a fish market and a milk processing area to cater to various business needs.

Recognizing the need for additional space, Governor Lenku revealed plans for constructing a second market in Oloosirkon-Sholinke ward and instructed the Trade Department to begin registering traders who would not secure stalls in the current market. Additionally, he commended the Kitengela Municipality team for maintaining cleanliness and pledged continued resource allocation to the municipality.

To tackle water shortages, the governor allocated Sh30 million from the county's supplementary budget for this financial year. Furthermore, following discussions with President William Ruto, a promise of Sh500 million was made to enhance water infrastructure.

The County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Investments and Enterprise Development, Leah Marias, stated that over 800 vegetable traders would be the first to relocate to the new market following a validation exercise. She emphasized that the process would be fair and transparent, prioritizing traders who had been displaced to a makeshift market during construction.

Area Member of County Assembly Paul Matuyia expressed gratitude to the traders for their patience over the six years they operated from a makeshift market near the Kitengela bus terminus. Meanwhile, Kajiado Market traders Chairperson, Racheal Supeet, praised the county for providing a modern market. She highlighted the improved conditions, which are expected to enhance sales due to the clean, accessible, and organized environment.
