Post: Kwale Expands Road Network to Boost Economic Growth

Kwale: In a significant push for road infrastructure projects, Kwale County has announced plans to expand road projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth. The coastal county government announced plans to expand its urban road network from 3,833 kilometres to 6,833 kilometres within five years, reflecting a steadfast commitment to infrastructure development.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Fatuma Achani says the move is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the coastal county. 'Our goal is to support rapid economic growth, address infrastructure deficits and improve the quality of life for our people,' she said. She expressed her commitment to building a robust infrastructure that supports growth and prosperity, highlighting the devolved government's dedication to developing quality road networks.

Speaking in Msambweni sub-county, Achani says the new initiative is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety, and ultimately create new socio-economic opportunities for the area residents. Achani, who was accompanied by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads and Infrastructure, Ali Joto, stated that improved road infrastructure would reduce transportation costs, boost local businesses, and enhance disposable income, thus ultimately alleviating poverty.

Ongoing construction projects include the 2.8-kilometre Kona Polisi-Msambweni County Referral Hospital Road in Msambweni Sub-County and the 6-kilometre Tiwi-Vinuni road in Matuga Constituency. These improvements will make it easier for people to get around, especially those who need to use government services like Msambweni County Referral Hospital and Kwale Sub-County Hospital.

Achani highlighted the importance of road infrastructure for socio-economic development and reaffirmed her administration's commitment to improving the county's transport network to enhance mobility and economic growth. The coastal county boss says the resulting improvements in road quality and connectivity will facilitate better access to essential services, markets, and economic opportunities.

Achani says Kwale has built 20 kilometres of new roads over the last two years, including the Mwangwei-Majoreni route, while an additional 10.8 kilometres are currently under construction in various parts of the county, including the Tsimba-Vyongwani road in Matuga Sub County and the Mkilo-Kalalani-Mavirivirini road in Kinango Sub County. She says the devolved government has already secured funds and contracts awarded to competent firms, adding that the upgrade projects will also provide several contracting and employment opportunities.

'We remain dedicated to improving road infrastructure, promoting connectivity, and driving prosperity,' she said. County Executive for Roads and Infrastructure Ali Joto has assured the residents, traders, and businesses that the projects will proceed as scheduled. He stressed the importance of improving county road networks, citing its crucial role in connecting communities, facilitating local trade, and ensuring access to essential services.
