Kilifi: President Dr. William Ruto has launched the Tezo affordable housing project in Kilifi County, marking a significant step in the government’s plan to provide quality and affordable housing while creating employment opportunities for the residents.
According to Kenya News Agency, the project, located along the Kilifi-Malindi Road, will see the construction of 1,000 housing units, making it one of the largest housing initiatives in the coastal region. Speaking at the launch, President Ruto emphasized the importance of the project in transforming the lives of Kilifi residents.
“This is not just about houses; it is about jobs, businesses, and transforming lives. We are ensuring that the young people of Kilifi get opportunities to work, earn a living and be part of the country’s development,” he said.
The project, which sits on 5 acres of land, will consist of 200 social housing units, 600 affordable housing units, and 200 market-rate units. It will also feature commercial centers, a clubhouse, a basketball court, a kindergarten, playgrounds, green spaces, and a secure boundary wall. The government is working towards ensuring that the housing project not only provides shelter to the community but also creates a sustainable community.
The Head of State highlighted that the project would create employment for at least 1,000 people, including electricians, plumbers, masons, architects, and other skilled workers, with the construction phase alone expected to employ 200 workers per day. “Raw materials for the project will be sourced locally. Our Jua Kali artisans and young people from TVET colleges will play a central role in the construction,” he assured.
The President also said that the government is working closely with the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) to ensure the local skilled workers benefit directly from the initiative. Construction is already underway with foundation work, material procurement, and infrastructure development progressing as planned.
Dr. Ruto assured residents that the government is committed to completing the project on schedule. “We are on track, and I will be back on 3rd April, 2026, to officially open the completed housing units,” he announced.
Meanwhile, beyond Tezo, the government has also announced plans to construct an additional 5,000 units across Kilifi County, with projects set for Bofa, Watamu, and Mtwapa. These developments are expected to further boost employment and improve access to affordable housing in the County.
Ruto urged leaders to focus on development rather than politics, emphasising that service delivery should take priority. “We are not here for politics; we are here for development. That is what leaders should be focusing on-improving the people’s lives,” he added. The launch was met with optimism from the local community, with many residents welcoming the initiative as a step toward better housing and economic empowerment.
