Mombasa: A family in Shanzu, Mombasa County, is appealing for financial help to facilitate a lifesaving liver transplant for their six-month-old baby, Abdullahi Wamboi, who has been diagnosed with neonatal hepatitis.
According to Kenya News Agency, neonatal hepatitis is a serious liver condition that causes inflammation and damage to the liver in newborns, and if untreated, can lead to liver failure. The infant's mother, Naomi Wamboi Njuguna, shared that Abdullahi developed jaundice at six weeks old and was first taken to Kilifi County Hospital.
He was later referred to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), where tests and a surgical procedure revealed severe liver complications. 'He underwent surgery at CGTRH, and doctors confirmed he needs a liver transplant. Unfortunately, this procedure is not available in Kenya,' said Njuguna.
The transplant is scheduled to take place in India at an estimated cost of Sh4.8 million. Naomi, currently unemployed and staying with a well-wisher, says she cannot raise the funds without help. In the meantime, the child depends on weekly medication to maintain liver function and immunity. 'His medicine costs Sh4,500 per week. Without it, his condition worsens,' she added.
