Post: KRA Waives Sh158 Billion in Penalties, Providing Relief to 2.9 Million Taxpayers

Nairobi: The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced the waiver of Sh158 billion in penalties, fines, and interest under the Tax Amnesty Programme, which commenced on December 27, 2024. This initiative has brought relief to over 2.9 million taxpayers who qualified for the amnesty as of April 9, 2025.

According to Kenya News Agency, KRA Commissioner for Large and Medium Taxpayers, Mrs. Rispah Simiyu, stated that the tax amnesty has resulted in the collection of Sh10.9 billion in principal tax payments. The programme encourages taxpayers to update their tax records by offering a waiver on penalties, interest, and fines for tax debts incurred up to December 31, 2023.

Mrs. Simiyu emphasized that the programme, which will continue until June 30, 2025, reflects KRA's dedication to assisting taxpayers in resolving past tax issues and improving their compliance. She noted that it provides a valuable opportunity to settle tax matters on favorable terms, allowing taxpayers to start afresh.

She further explained that taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes up to December 31, 2023, must apply through the iTax system and submit a structured payment plan to settle the debts by June 30, 2025. However, tax debts arising from January 1, 2024, onwards do not qualify for amnesty, and all related penalties, interest, and principal taxes remain payable.

Mrs. Simiyu also urged taxpayers involved in ongoing tax disputes to consider the Alternative Dispute Resolution framework to expedite resolution before the amnesty deadline. She advised all taxpayers to take prompt action and benefit from the tax amnesty before the June 30, 2025, deadline.
