Murang’a: Members of the County Assembly of Murang’a have approved four nominees to sit in the selection panel for recruiting members of the County Public Service Board (CPSB).
According to Kenya News Agency, the Assembly’s select committee on appointments rejected one nominee who did not meet the requirements stipulated under the Public Appointment (County Assemblies Approval) Act of 2017. The Chairperson of the Select Committee, Francis Kibe, moved a motion to adopt the report on the vetting of the nominees, recommending that the House reject the nomination of Elijah Churu, who failed to meet the set requirements.
Those found suitable for the panel included Julia Munyua, who was proposed to be chairperson; Miriam Wangari, a member of the Law Society of Kenya; John Muiruri to represent the workers’ union; and Amos Kimani, a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
‘Mr. Churu did not demonstrate adequate technical, administrative, academic or legal knowledge of the position he was nominated for,’ said Kibe, who is also Leader of the Majority. He further stated that Churu had not submitted his clearance from the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), and neither did he present a satisfactory explanation for it.
The motion was seconded by Naomi Maina, MCA for Ruchu Ward, with other Ward representatives supporting it. The Committee had held the approval hearings on February 19, 2025, basing their grounds on integrity threshold, professional experience, requisite abilities, academic qualifications, and knowledge of issues relating to the position nominated for.
Furthermore, the nominees had also submitted their Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) and testimonials for scrutiny as a preliminary observation for suitability of appointment prior to the approval hearings. Members of the public were invited to attend the hearing or submit memoranda by way of sworn affidavits on the suitability or otherwise of the nominees, following the advertisement published in dailies by the Clerk of the County Assembly on February 12, 2025.
While thanking the MCAs for their support, Kibe assured the House that the committee would quickly and efficiently vet the nominee forwarded by Governor Irungu Kang’ata to replace Churu towards the completion of the panel composition. Once the nominees are sworn in, the panel will embark on the exercise of recruiting new members for the CPSB.
