Kwale: Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya has called for a better moral upbringing of children for a better society. Mvurya urged parents and religious leaders to pay more attention to the moral upbringing of the youth, emphasizing the role of families and religious institutions in instilling good morals.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mvurya, speaking in Kwale County, attributed the moral decadence in the country to parental negligence, highlighting the need for moral responsibility and guidance to foster positive societal change. He stressed the importance of vigilance in security matters and guiding children in an upright manner, particularly to reduce insecurity in tourist areas like Kwale and Mombasa.
During his visit to Kwale, Mvurya distributed a consignment of food to residents across the six sub-counties during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, marking the end of Ramadhan. He stated that this gesture was part of the national government's annual support for Muslim communities during the holy month.
Mvurya encouraged Muslims to use Eid-ul-Fitr as an occasion to pray for peace and prosperity. Additionally, he led a fundraising effort in Msambweni Sub County, raising Sh4.1 million to support over 300 Imams and Madrassa teachers.
He expressed concerns over the threat of moral decay in the country, linking it to the influence of poor role models on young people. Mvurya cited the emergence of machete-wielding gangs, known as 'Panga boys', in Kwale and Mombasa counties as a consequence of inadequate moral upbringing.
Mvurya called on the media and religious leaders to assist in restoring moral values and uprightness. He urged religious leaders to take a leading role in efforts to curb immorality and indiscipline among the youth.
