Post: Nandi County Upscales Efforts to Boost Dairy Sector

Nairobi: Dairy farming in Nandi County, particularly in Tindiret sub county, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years.

According to Kenya News Agency, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Cooperative Development, Dr. Kiplimo Lagat, reported a notable increase in milk production from 471,850 liters to 600,000 liters per day.

Dr. Lagat attributes this growth to the construction and equipping of 25 milk cooling plants and an additional 16 built by farmers' organizations. These facilities have improved milk collection, bulking, and quality. He urged dairy cooperatives to focus on value addition, branding, and quality certification to elevate Nandi-branded products in the market.

Furthermore, the county plans to establish a cooperative development fund to finance equipment, transportation, and digital systems. Dr. Lagat noted that digitization would enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the societies.

Farmers have been encouraged to maintain highly productive dairy cows and embrace bulking to increase profits. Additionally, the initiative advocates for smallholder farmers to shift from subsistence farming to agribusiness, highlighting cooperative societies as crucial in enhancing their earnings.
