Post: Vihiga Governor Advocates for Carbon Market to Enhance Green Economy

Vihiga: Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Otichillo has backed the establishment of a carbon market, saying it would spur sustainable development while strengthening climate change mitigation efforts. Speaking during a consultative meeting with Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Deborah Barasa, the Governor said the initiative would open up new economic opportunities for communities through carbon trading.

According to Kenya News Agency, the proposed market will enable businesses and governments to trade carbon credits, creating financial incentives for investment in clean energy and eco-friendly practices. Dr. Otichillo said Vihiga County, with its forests, wetlands, and agricultural lands, is strategically positioned to benefit from the initiative by acting as a carbon sink. He further noted that proceeds from the trade would enhance funding for environmental projects while improving livelihoods.

The Governor appealed for partnerships with both local and international organizations to build capacity and sensitize farmers and businesses on the economic potential of carbon trading. Dr. Barasa affirmed the national government's support, saying the move was in line with Kenya's commitment to address the effects of climate change while growing a green economy. She stated that Vihiga's initiative aligns perfectly with the government's environmental goals, highlighting the importance of exploring innovative solutions for climate change mitigation.

The carbon market is part of Kenya's broader strategy to strengthen ecological resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods.
