Mombasa: The National Construction Authority (NCA) has initiated a comprehensive sensitization campaign to educate industry stakeholders on the newly introduced National Building Code 2024. This updated code, which replaces the previous version from 1968, is designed to streamline construction standards, enhance safety, and encourage sustainable building practices across the nation.
According to Kenya News Agency, the sensitization workshop was held at Pride Inn Beach Resort, Shanzu, where Engineer Godana Hargura underscored the NCA's responsibility to oversee the implementation and ensure compliance within the industry. Hargura stated that the code was officially published on March 1, 2024, and will come into effect on March 1, 2025. The rollout began on March 10 in Nairobi and is currently focusing on the first 14 counties, with plans to extend to all 47 counties in the coming weeks.
Hargura noted that the new building code marks a significant improvement from the previous one, which was adopted from the British system in 1968. The revised code supports sustainability and environmental responsibility by allowing innovation with materials that meet the required standards. It emphasizes safety and climate-conscious construction, ensuring efficient use of resources like natural lighting while aligning with modern building practices.
Hargura explained that the new regulations establish clear guidelines to ensure collaboration among all relevant stakeholders in the construction sector. He emphasized that before any building project begins, it must receive approval from the county government to verify compliance with legal and procedural requirements. Additionally, the project must undergo environmental assessment by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to address sustainability concerns.
The NCA will assess the qualifications of professionals involved and inspect building materials to ensure they meet required quality standards. These measures are designed to uphold safety and professionalism in the construction industry.
Joshua Muthoka, the Assistant County Commissioner, speaking on behalf of the Mombasa County Commissioner, assured full support for the sensitization efforts. He affirmed that they will assist in coordination to ensure the NCA effectively implements its initiatives.
