Post: Oliti and Yive agree to ceasefire in local peace agreement

The Oliti and Yive communities in Akwaya Subdivision in Manyu division of the South West region agreed to ceasefire in a meeting chaired by the DO, Augustin Ewe Mbua.In the peace agreement on July 31, 2024, aimed at restoring stability, both camps have agreed to an unconditional cease-fire. The resolution, which outlines several key measures, emphasizes the need for mutual respect for the boundary demarcation established by Abine Augustin's commission.Both parties have committed to denouncing all separatist activities within their communities. Chiefs of the Asumbo court area have pledged to employ traditional methods to end the ongoing violence.The resolutions, which are binding on the entire community, will not require approval from external elites. To ensure compliance, a follow-up committee will be formed, with severe sanctions imposed on those who fail to adhere.Additionally, the government has promised assistance to the Yive community, providing building materials or financial support to aid in t heir resettlement after the destruction of their homes by Oliti separatists. A military post will also be established in Yive village to safeguard residents and property.This comprehensive approach aims to promote peace and rebuild the affected areas effectively.The Yive had fled their land and settled in neighbouring Nigerian towns. The two parties have been at loggerheads for 17 years.A previous peace agreement in 2007 was broken in 2008 when hostilities resumed.It is hoped that this year's peace treaty will he long lasting.Source: Cameroon News Agency
