Nairobi: Siaya Governor James Orengo is urging for more severe actions to be taken against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, in light of remarks Orengo described as outrageous, inexcusable, and hateful.
According to Kenya News Agency, Orengo, alongside several elected leaders from Bungoma and Migori counties, expressed that an apology and resignation from the position of Vice Chair of the Council of Governors is not sufficient to address Governor Kahiga's actions. Speaking at Kang'o Ka Jaramogi, where he and the widow of the former prime minister, Ida Odinga, were receiving mourners, Orengo stated that Kahiga's widely quoted speech violated several constitutional articles, particularly article 73, which mandates public office holders to conduct themselves in a manner that honors their positions.
'A mere apology may not be enough. The council of governors has acted promptly but, in my view, a mere resignation from the post of the vice chairman of the council is insufficient to atone for his sins,' Orengo remarked. He emphasized the necessity for a united nation, free from hateful rhetoric, and insisted that further serious measures be pursued.
Governors Lusaka and Ochilo Ayako, from Bungoma and Migori counties respectively, echoed Orengo's sentiments while leading delegations to pay respects at the former premier's grave. They labeled Kahiga's remarks as 'un-African'.
In response, Governor Kahiga issued a press statement apologizing for his comments regarding Mr. Odinga's demise, clarifying that his statements were personal and did not reflect any community or political affiliation.
As the nation grapples with mourning and the orange party faces a test of unity following the burial of the former premier, Awendo lawmaker Walter Owino urged ODM leaders to honor Mr. Odinga by ensuring party unity. Owino called upon those aspiring for leadership roles to prioritize unity over other interests.
