Parliament’s Bureau decides to remain in session to consider legislation criminalising normalisation

The Bureau of the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP), during its regular session held on Thursday, unanimously decided to remain in continuous session due to the developing situation in Palestine. The Bureau decided to devote the morning session of the plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, October 17, 2023, to deliberations on the developments in Palestine. It discussed a written request signed by 97 members for urgent consideration of a draft law criminalising normalisation, which had been referred to the Committee on Legal Affairs and Citizens' Rights. Another written request from 62 members concerned the convening of an emergency plenary session in connection with the heinous aggression against the Palestinian people and the discussion of support mechanisms, according to a statement issued by the ARP on Thursday evening. The Bureau recommended that members be prepared to attend any emergency plenary session urgently called to address developments and take appropriate decisions. They also decided to refer the request to examine the proposed law criminalising normalisation to the Committee on Rights and Freedoms. It should be noted that the Permanent Delegation of Tunisia to the League of Arab States presented Tunisia's comprehensive reservations to statement No. 8987 issued by the Arab League Ministerial Meeting during its extraordinary session on October 11. This statement dealt with the means of action to stop the Israeli aggression and achieve peace and security. President Kais Saied instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, to express reservations about the Arab League decision. The decision had stressed the "immediate cessation of the Israeli war on Gaza" and called on all parties to exercise restraint, while condemning the targeting and killing of civilians on both sides.
