State revenues from customs duties during the first quarter (Q1) of 2023 did not exceed 4.5% of the overall tax revenues and 7.5% of indirect taxes, according to data released by the Finance Ministry.
Customs duties reached TND 439 million at the end of March 2023, slightly up by 1.7% compared with the same period in 2022, according to a note on the provisional results of the execution of the State Budget for 2023, published recently by the Finance Department.
This slight increase in customs duties comes at a time when Tunisian imports rose by 5.5% to TND 19,460.9 at the end of March 2023, according to the latest data on foreign trade at current prices published by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The Finance Ministry also reported an increase of 13.8% in general tax revenues in Q1 2023 compared with the same period in 2022, to stand at TND 9,756.1 million, including TND 5,866.3 in the form of indirect payments.
Value-added taxes (VAT) grew during the period from March 2022 to March 2023 from TND 2,351 million to TND 2,540.2 million, i.e. up 8%, combined with a 14.6% rise in consumption duty over the same period, to TND 953.3 million.
