Post: Scholars Advocate for Tech-Driven Agriculture to Address Food Insecurity

Nakuru: Scholars have called for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies in agriculture, warning that failure to modernize farming practices could worsen the country's food insecurity. They argued that technology has become central to boosting production, protecting the environment, and creating sustainable livelihoods.

According to Kenya News Agency, during an interdisciplinary conference at Mount Kenya University's (MKU) Nakuru campus, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi highlighted the importance of tools such as precision agriculture, which enhances yields with minimal wastage, and drone surveillance to monitor soil health and water usage. 'Technology in agriculture is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Food shortages are not inevitable if we fully leverage innovation,' Prof. Jaganyi stated. He emphasized the need for government training programs to bridge knowledge gaps among farmers.

Dr. David Watene, Director of Education at the State Department of University Education, assured of government support, highlighting the importance of partnerships among universities, industries, and state agencies to scale up research and innovation. 'Research must move from the lab to the farm if we are to feed the nation,' he stressed.

Dr. Jacqueline Omuya, MKU Nakuru Campus Director, underscored the necessity of grassroots sensitization on emerging technologies for communities to benefit from these innovations. She noted the importance of farmer training on soil improvement, irrigation methods, and storage facilities, stating, 'Technology can only transform rural communities if it is understood and adopted where farming happens at the village level.'

Experts at the conference showcased AI-driven weather prediction models to help farmers plan planting seasons more accurately. Student innovators also demonstrated technologies aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and improving water-efficient irrigation.

The conference, themed 'Emerging Technologies and Sustainable Practices: Innovation in Agriculture, Health, Renewable Energy and Business Practices,' gathered researchers and practitioners from across East Africa to share solutions to pressing societal challenges, with agriculture emerging as a top priority.
