Migori: Kakrao Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Suna East Sub-county is launching a Clean-up Day initiative to clean the town. TVC Principal Flex Odhiambo plans to host World Clean-up Day, focusing on circular fashion and educating the Migori community about the importance of textile waste reuse and recycling.
According to Kenya News Agency, the cleaning exercise brought together students, community members, and environmental advocates, highlighting the importance of responsible waste management within the County. Additionally, Odhiambo said that the small pieces from clothing can be used for beautification and making items like pillows, sofa sets, toys, and bags, among others.
The event, part of a global environmental conservation movement, emphasized the role of recycling in reducing textile waste. Furthermore, the official encouraged the textile industries in the country to start thinking about how they can reuse the waste from clothes through textile waste recycling. He noted that the country is producing two million tonnes of textile waste that can be recycled to improve lives, conserve the environment, and generate more income.
For instance, Oscar Kadenge, a student leader at Kakrao TVC, noted that recycling textiles offers new opportunities, especially for the younger generation. 'Small pieces of cloth can be reused to design modern fashion outfits for Gen Z and help both the environment and creativity in fashion,' said Kadenge. He explained that textiles, if recycled properly, can go further in reducing pollution and supporting sustainable industries.
Kadenge encouraged young people to take the lead in promoting eco-friendly practices in their schools, businesses, and homes to promote and conserve the environment. World Cleanup Day, observed globally every September, aims to unite people across the world in efforts to clean up litter, manage waste responsibly, and restore the environment.
