Murang'a: Sh2.3 million from the Uwezo Fund has been distributed to 33 groups within the Kiharu constituency. The financial support targets 30 new women and youth groups, along with three groups that have previously benefited from the fund, as part of the Sh18 million allocated for the constituency for the current financial year.
According to Kenya News Agency, the constituency Uwezo Fund chairperson, Ms. Tabitha Kanyungu, stated that approximately 45 percent of the allocated funds for Kiharu have already been distributed. The loans provided are interest-free, focusing on empowering grassroots groups through access to affordable financing. Ms. Kanyungu emphasized the initiative's aim to ensure financial resources reach women, youth, and persons with disabilities, with loans being distributed in Murang'a township ward.
Ms. Kanyungu also highlighted the implementation of training sessions in capacity building, equipping group members with skills necessary for managing and growing their businesses. She stressed the importance of sustainability by teaching financial management, proper record-keeping, and enterprise growth strategies.
On her part, the county director of youth, Ms. Trizah Wanjiku, encouraged groups to take advantage of the interest-free Uwezo Fund loans, aimed at fostering economic development at the grassroots level. She also informed the groups about the Nyota Programme, a World Bank-funded initiative that supports youth empowerment and training, including vocational training, business startup support, and facilitation of national exams.
The Nyota Programme is part of the government's broader agenda to combat youth unemployment by providing practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge. Beneficiaries of the Uwezo loans expressed their gratitude, acknowledging the positive impact the funding will have on improving their livelihoods and community development.
