Nairobi: Wajir County Government has launched its third annual Iftar food distribution program, providing much-needed relief to vulnerable households during the holy month of Ramadan. The initiative, organized by the Department of Special Programmes, aims at ensuring that disadvantaged families could observe Ramadan with dignity and proper nutrition.
According to Kenya News Agency, this year's program has seen the procurement of approximately 600 metric tons of assorted food supplies, including maize flour, fortified porridge, dates, and cooking oil. The aid package is set to benefit more than 23,000 households across all 30 wards of Wajir County, offering critical support to those in need.
Speaking at the launch, Wajir Deputy Governor, Ahmed Muhumed emphasized the significance of the initiative in fostering community well-being during Ramadan. 'Ramadan is a time of reflection, generosity, and communal support. Our administration remains committed to ensuring that no family goes hungry during this sacred period. This program exemplifies our dedication to uplifting our people and strengthening social welfare,' said Deputy Governor Muhumed.
The food distribution is being carried out in close collaboration with religious leaders, particularly the Council of Imams, who play a key role in identifying the most deserving families. The initiative prioritizes support for people living with disabilities, single-parents and child-headed households, widows, the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, and other economically disadvantaged groups.
Muhumed reaffirmed that the county government is dedicated to promoting inclusivity and social welfare, ensuring that food reaches the most vulnerable communities in a timely and efficient manner. Local leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, commending the county government for its continued support during the fasting period. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, acknowledging the program as a crucial lifeline in the face of economic challenges.
