Nairobi: To commemorate World Engineering Day 2025, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Society of Engineering Students (SES) hosted a pivotal event that served to recognize both the global impact and critical role that engineers possess in addressing pressing world issues.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event, themed 'Engineering a Sustainable Resilient Future Against Climate Change,' gathered engineering students and industry experts for discussions, presentations, and activities seeking to inspire collaboration and underscore the role of engineering in achieving Kenya's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Addressing the engineering students, Faith Waraki, a leader in STEM, E-Mobility, and climate action and the founder of the Youth in STEME-Mobility Network Kenya, implored them to actively apply their expertise to positively impact their communities. She urged the students to delve into Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing its potential in improving academic performance and driving climate solutions, noting that mastering AI skills would provide them with powerful tools for both their studies and addressing global challenges.
'I implore you to involve yourselves in climate action and pursue innovative climate solutions. Maintain dedication to your work, and always retain confidence in your capabilities,' stated Mrs. Waraki.
On his part, while recognizing the students' significant contributions, particularly the impactful mentorship of high school students interested in engineering, Dr. Eng. Hiram Nderitu, Patron of JKUAT SES and Principal of the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC), applauded the student society for their hard work and commitment. Nderitu commended the initiative, noting that it effectively promoted the engineering field while also ensuring the continued viability of engineering courses.
Additionally, JKUAT alumnus and Secretary of Geotech Kenya, Eng. Ogallo Robert, encouraged the students to leverage available opportunities, commit to ongoing learning, remain informed about industry developments, and establish a strong professional network. 'As engineers, we are the architects of progress, connecting innovation to real-world solutions; from sustainable infrastructure to technological breakthroughs and community problem-solving, we are instrumental in shaping the future. We must therefore recognize our technical abilities, innovative thinking, and steadfast commitment to our profession,' he concluded.
