Kericho: Women in Kericho have been urged to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight of competitive sports, as leaders rally behind a groundbreaking football tournament aimed at boosting their confidence, health, and leadership potential. Speaking to Kenya News Agency while officially inaugurating the coveted high-energy Ann Too ladies' tournament at Kericho Teachers Training College stadium, Betting, Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) Director Ann Too urged women in Kericho and across the country to seize sports as a tool for empowerment and transformation.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ms. Too emphasized the importance of providing women with a platform to showcase their talents in football, viewing it as a path to healing, growth, and leadership. She also encouraged fellow leaders to support the registration of women's football clubs with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to unlock more opportunities, especially for vulnerable groups like teen mothers and school dropouts.
This tournament has drawn 24 women's football teams from across Anemoi Sub-County, marking a significant milestone in the region's push for gender equality in sports. Among the players is a young woman with three children who has returned to school through support from tournaments like this. These platforms can spotlight such cases and draw the attention of well-wishers to help them rebuild their lives.
Also present at the launch was Member of County Assembly for Kipchebor Ward Dr. Erick Bett, who pledged to champion budgetary allocations for similar initiatives across Kericho's 30 wards. 'Our county is rich in talent. We intend to work with our multinational partners to support both male and female sporting activities from the grassroots,' said Dr. Bett.
The tournament, which kicked off Tuesday, is being sponsored by Ms. Ann Too, in partnership with Sidian Bank and JamboBet. It seeks to provide a platform for women and girls, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds, to showcase their talent, regain self-esteem, and pursue leadership through football.
Teams in the contest include West Valley Starlets, Ketitui Queens, Kenegut Power, Kapkiam, Samutet Starlets, Kipchebor Starlets, Kiburet Club, II Arrows, Kapsoit Zone TRS, Brooke Holy Stars, Grasslands, Kipchebor Ladies, Municipality Starlets, among others from across Ainamoi constituency.
The tournament, set to culminate this Saturday at The Kiprugut Chumo Stadium, promises not only pride and recognition but also attractive prizes. The winning team will walk away with Sh1,000,000, with Sh300,000 for the first runners-up, Sh150,000 for third place, and Sh50,000 for the fourth team. All participating teams will also receive footballs and uniforms.
