Busia: Residents of Busia County have been advised to engage professionals in building and construction works in order to ensure safe structures. Speaking during a public sensitization forum at a hotel in Busia, a Board Member of the National Construction Authority (NCA), Eng. Gilbert Arasa, noted that the construction field is the most abused, with non-professionals assuming roles of engineers, among others.
According to Kenya News Agency, Arasa highlighted the dangers of involving untrained individuals in construction, pointing out past incidents where such involvement led to structural collapses and fatalities. He emphasized that using non-professionals exposes building owners to potential legal liabilities, such as murder or manslaughter charges, should a building collapse.
Arasa further stressed the importance of professionals in advising on the appropriate materials for construction projects. He noted instances where individuals have sourced building plans from unqualified persons, resulting in structural failures. He called on the National Government Administration Officers to support the National Construction Authority by reporting any cases of individuals employing non-professionals for construction tasks.
Additionally, Arasa announced the implementation of the National Building Code 2024, which replaces the outdated 1968 code. The new code, effective from March 2025, addresses advancements in technology, the use of new materials, and climate change considerations. He admonished those taking shortcuts in construction to comply with the new regulations.
'I want to urge all those engaging in construction works to read, understand, and adhere to it,' Arasa stated, urging adherence to the use of qualified personnel registered by the National Construction Authority.
